Njun “Ashes”

Ochre, charcoal and binding medium on canvas

50 x 75cm

This painting is a representation of the wrong way to burn country. Pre-colonisation, this continent was cared for with fire. Burning country was healing and it made for a healthy fertile land full of life.

This painting is about when ‘healing country’ isn’t done right. In order to heal country there needs to be consultation with Indigenous people, sharing cultural knowledge of country surrounding when to burn and how to burn.

Indigenous people need authority to practice ancient knowledges and to restore our practices that will allow us to heal country and show how not to burn country too hot, leaving nothing but ashes.
