All That Glitters

This work is inspired by “A Tale of Two Cities” – a song by j.cole which also is the title of a Charles Dickens novel I read years ago, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. Some of its major themes are rebellion, the conflict between rich and poor, and a coming to political consciousness. This painting depicts a mother trying to sell cassava at a street stall, to provide the best for her beloved child. This is a typical Kampala job for an illiterate mother who has to survive with the hope of making it out to a richer neighbourhood. “All that glitters is not gold, but tell me, till you get it, how could you know?”
